The Lansing Garden Part 2

A view posts back I blogged about the beginnings of my garden.  Not to be confused with "the Gray's garden" post, you can check out my 1st garden post here.

Anywho, I bought one of those raised garden kits.  Yes, only one. That's about all I will have time for this year.

So here they are not filled yet.  Tossed some potting soil in and planted all 9 of my plants.  Whoo hoo, yet just 9.  You can see the black tubing poking out from the ground cover.  I fixed that up, poked holes where I needed holes, and added a couple small sprayers.

As you can see, my garden is really small.  Most of the plants are some sort of tomato, but I do have one pepper in there.

This plant is doing the best. And hopefully soon we will have some tomatoes.

UPDATE:
Since it's been a couple of weeks since I planted these plants, it seems that only 3 survived the replanting process.  Darn it!  Oh well better luck next time.

The Gray's Garden

This year we planted a little early, APRIL, but my business tends to pick up in the spring so we jumped at the chance when we had a free weekend. As I have said before my garden last year was a total disaster. My Husband and oldest son cannot be trusted unless supervised. Our garden is on the side of our home so we are a little limited in space. This year we planted carrots, red and white onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, garlic, broccoli, cucumber, strawberries, and blackberries. I want to freeze tomato sauce and make freezer jam with the berries. We'll see. Here are the before pics:

I already have blackberries!

I would have more strawberries, but my boys keep sneaking in and eating them. :)

The Lansing Garden Part 1

Hello all, back to show a little of what I've been up to in my garden.  When we bought the house last year there was this ginormous back corner that was garden for the previous owner.  I was going to use it for the same thing.  However, it's taking me forever to get around to getting it together.  Here's how big the back corner is.

It's pretty big.  Well just this spring my husband informed me that he was going to use most of it to put a storage shed, a big storage shed.  So this is what I got left to work with.  About a 16'x5' space.

I was like ok, I can work with that. So I decided to go out and get a wrought iron gate.  And put it up as the entrance.

Well then I needed to enclose the primeter.  I ultimately wanted to buy the wrought iron fence pieces that match the gate, but there were $18 for one little 2' maybe 3' section.  So in the mean time I needed something cheap.  So I built my own fence using stakes and thin wood stripes.  Just nailed them all together and hammered it in the ground.

As you can see it's pretty rickety and looks super cheap.  But the whole idea of it was to keep my chocolate lab out.  Unfortunately, it's pointless now.  Our dog Jake, tragically died this morning.  My husband and I and our sons will miss him terribly. He was such a wonderful friendly dog.

Sorry to be such a Debbie Downer, but the whole purpose was the fence and now I really don't need a really fancy one, so I guess I'll opt for the little white picket fence garden boarder.  Added a few touches to the front.  Stay tuned for more garden pics to come. And I promise it won't be so depressing.

Pruning Rose Bushes

So I guess it's that time of year again.......hacking pruning the rose bushes.  We bought our house last April and I really didn't get to do a good pruning.  So this was my first year.  So who did I turn to to learn more on how to prune roses? Only the place who has the best looking roses I've ever seen!  Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC! I found a video tutorial online to help me out. I also called my local nursery.  Anyway, I was advised that you can do a light pruning in late fall, just to bring the height down.  So my amazing husband and I cut our roses down to a 3' height.  Much better!

Next I was told to prune your roses so down to about 18" in height, leaving only about 4 or 5 branches coming out of the base.  They should be coming out like a vase shape, nothing in the middle and no crossing branches.  I have about 18 rose bushes that line my back yard fence, so I only managed to do about 6.  Will tackle the rest another day.  I also, have about 30 rose bushes that line the front perimeter of my house!  I thought to myself.....hmmmmm.....this is alot of work, I'm not sure I have it in me to do the whole front yard! Yikees!  So I posted "18 rose bushes for FREE" on craigslist......and within 1/2 hour I had 4 emails.  Of course the catch....Free if you dig!  Anyway, off track a little..... so here is what my rose bushes look like now.  So much, much better! I hope they look fan-tab-u-lous when they bloom.
